Re: "sociobiology" citation

Richard,

It is the typical line of sociobiologists that their opponents are
ideologues bent on denying scientific truth. The naysayers are decried as
"biological egalitarians," poor misguided individuals who deny inherent
biological differences among groups of people for the purpose of advancing
some doomed socialist utopia. It is typical of sociobiologists to turn
reality upsidedown--scientific evidence becomes ideology and the lack of
scientific evidence becomes truth. The problem with the line, Richard, is
that it stands in place of the evidence. Sociobiologists haven't isolated
the behavioral gene. I recognize how immensely frustrating it must be to
build such a lofty sandcastle only to have the tide of facts and logic
wash it away every decade or so (or about as often as sociobiology is
resurrected in the public discourse). However the failure of sociobiology
to provide support for its tenets is not the fault of the people who
refuse to believe in myths and flights of fancy. You have to stop blaming
the poverty of sociobiology on its critics. That's bad form.

Respectfully,
Andy Austin
