Workshop on SLAVE SYSTEMS IN ASIA AND THE INDIAN OCEAN:
Their Structure and Change in the 19th and 20th Centuries
CERINS, University of Avignon, 18-20 May 2000
Co-organisers: IIAS, INALCO
This workshop is organised around the theme of systems of slavery in
Asiaand
the Indian Ocean, where European participation in the slave trade and
ownership of slaves was far less than in the Atlantic system. The
definition of slavery has been and remains a matter of debate. Strict
adhesion to the legal concept of 19th century slavery has led to an
under-valuation of the perpetuation of forms of slavery into the post
-Abolition period - notably in the Asia-Indian Oceanregion. This
workshop
aims to generate from regional case studies of slave systems a general
overview of structures of slavery in the Asia-Indian Ocean region -
taking
advantage of the rich comparative framework offered by similar studies
of
the Atlantic system. Workshop themes will include:
- The slave market (supply and demand: organisation, credit structure,
routes, numbers, sex
and age ratios etc.)
- The structure of slavery (ownership, slave status, differentiation of
roles,
economic significance, accumulation of material possessions,
heritage,
etc.)
- Abolition (cause and impact)
- Perpetuation of Disguised Slavery (the transition of structures
ofunfree
labour
from slavery through ‘emancipation’ )
- The Role and Status of the ex-Slave (social status, nomenclature,
economic role)
- Gender in Slavery (the male-female differentiation in status
andeconomic
activity
before, during and after abolition)
To facilitate the main aim of generating comparative
discussion,participants
will be expected to submit copies of their workshop paper to the
organisers
by 1 March 2000. Papers will be photocopied and each workshop
participantand
discussant will receive a complete set before the end of April 2000.
Participants will be expected to read and prepare comments on those
papers,
thus obviating the need to read their own papers publicly. Rather, for
each
session a discussant will be asked to present a 30 minute comparative
critique of groups of papers linked by region and theme.
Our intention is to produce a publication from the workshop proceedings.
The workshop registration fee is FF200 due by 1 March 2000.
Allparticipants
will be expected to seek funding for their transport and lodging.
Howeverwe
are ready to provide letters of support or any further documentation
which
may assist you in funding applications to cover these costs. We can also
offer information on local hotels and transport.
In addition to workshop sessions, there will also be an opportunity to
relax
and get to know colleagues in the convivial atmosphere of Provence.
Avignon
is the European city of Culture in the year 2000 and as such will provide
a
vibrant background for the workshop; we are planning several activities,
including a wine tasting trip to the famous Chateau Neuf du Pape
vineyards,
and a workshop dinner.
