Re: So what!

        Religion is certainly the product of genetic propensities and has
done much to further the emergence and progress of civilization.  So have
warfare, urbanization, slavery, feudalism, capitalism, and the invention
of writing.  In its time and place, it did what was needed to help hold
society together and reconcile people of all classes and castes to their
lot.  But most of the time it was closely allied to and supported by the
ruling and possessing elements in the society, and this generally remains
the case. I was careful to say in my post that this does not apply to all
religion.  Of course it does not apply to much of earliest Christianity,
much of Sufism, Lollards, Thomas Munzer, Taiping rebels, liberation
theologians, the service committees of Quakers and Unitarians, Gandhi's
Hinduism, Martin Luther King, there is a long list.

        What is "politicized religion"?  As I also said in my post,
"most religion is intrinsically political," and no, not just the kinds I
don't like.  Except for the occasional quietist sect or self-sequestered
hermit, religion almost invariably harbors a vision of the good polity.
"Politicized" to me is not a pejorative term at all.  I am sure that
everybody on this list is politicized.  But the major positive religions
of our era originated in pre-capitalist times and are steeped in
pre-capitalist pre-modern pre-scientific world-views.  If their leaders
cannot stomach capitalism because of its associations with modern secular
thought and/or Western imperialism, their default mode is not modern
secular socialism but an attempt to revert, time-travel if you please, to
the centuries of their founding, e.g., 7th-Century Arabia.  Actually
getting there is, of course, impossible, as WS analysis shows, but they
can try, and sometimes their efforts to resurrect the social relations of
production that obtained in these earlier centuries can be just as
oppressive to workers, or more so, than anything cooked up by
Western-style capitalists.

        So there is "good" religion and "bad" religion. Nevertheless, as
of 2003, the bad vastly outweighs the good in my judgment and ignoring
this fact out of allegiance to liberal multiculturalism (now a dogma of
Western plutocrats as well) does not serve the cause of working people.
Having said this, of course I must add that I believe the best way to
reanimate and mobilize socialism is to return to the religion of OUR
mothers and fathers--scientific humanism.  Being hominids, we still need
religion, but let it be a religion that squares with our reason and
experience as denizens of the 21st Century, not the 7th or the 1st.
