Today's WSJ, p. A11 (6/22/01) has an article (written from WSJ perspective) on how state companies in China, which in 1990 accounted for more than half of output, now p[roduce less than a third.  It has more detail, that might be of interest.

Subject: Who owns and rules China?

I have a friend who is doing some research on China, specifically, the degree to which the so-called "socialist" state is in fact owned, or at least controlled, by private interest groups who are benefitting from the labor of the working class. (For example, I've read that there is now private ownership of about 90% of all the property is "socialist" Vietnam...)

I'm sure there is a lot of info about that out there...from specific data about big corporations there to discussions about special privileges.

Any info or references would be appreciated.

Thanks,
