pedagogical utility of Gernot Kohler's unequal exchange

Conceptually interesting but, could you explain the derivation of the
denominator in this formula? What is PPP per capita?
These formulations might be useful in a course I teach which, because it
fulfills a number of liberal arts requirements, attracts a large number of
business majors not receptive to the concept that unequal exchange is an
undesirable reality or even cause for concern. Marxian thought is an
anachronism for many of my students who, according to their course
evaluations, find my critical perspective less than irrelevant (as well as
irreverent). Their recourse to social Darwinistic rationality then becomes
a different sort of contention. Leading me to a general question to the
list, how might one effectively engender critical perspectives in the
classroom? Is a general lack of humanitarian concern typical of college
students in the contemporary US or did I just get lucky?

Thanks, Charlie Stevens
