Dear Moore,
Currently, I am reading a book tittled "A Thousand Years of Non-Linear
History" by Manuel De Landa, Swerve Editions, New York, 1997/2000. In
this book De Landa tries to show that during last one thousand years
"the linear development" "progress" of hierarchical /bureaucratic/
stratified organizations is only one part of the story. In real
history, non-linear transfromations in directions of both hierarchy as
well as meshwork/network in complementarity and in opposition to each
other are abundant. Similarly, according to Manuel Castells ( The Rise
of Network Society, Blackwell, 1996), current capitalistic globalization
dynamics are in the direction of emergence of social relationships
organized in a non-hierarchical "network" structure. So, your proposal
of organizing future Utopia is to be along networks, meshworks and also
some hierarchical organizations. What is crucial is that these
hierarchical organizations should be under the control of people/
communities which are structurated in an egalitarian meshwork or
network way.
