CONTEXT AND PHILOSOPHY:
----------------------------------------
China's determined quest for modernisation, its opening to the
world and its massive capacity to influence global processes
require a new spirit of international accommodation and co-
operation.
In this spirit, the coming conference will explore a set of shared
one-world concerns including sustainable economic development,
international education, technological transfer, and mutual cultural
respect.
A major aim of the project is to make available to any Western
university, seriously contemplating new arrangements for Pacific
Studies, a negligible-cost opportunity of directly observing
emerging dynamics in Central China and entering into relevant co-
operative networks.
KEY NOTE FRAMEWORK.
------------------------------------
Four key note speakers from Middlesex University, London, in
association with four Chinese respondents will establish the basic
structure of the conference, with papers on the general themes:
(1) Science. Technology and Human Progress
(2) Education and International Understanding
(3) Media, Culture and Society
(4) Sustainable Economic Development.
The precise titles, to be decided shortly, will correspond to the
objectives of the conference and school: sharing historical
perspectives, building bridges of co-operation and generating a
discourse of openness and trust within which Chinese and Western
scholars may address equally world problems which equally beset
us all - rather than theoretical novelty and issue-identification.
