Readers of WSN, H-Amindian, and H-SEA

I received late approval for a special session at the American Sociological
Association meeting August 12-16, 2000 in Washington, D.C.

The title and abstract of the session are below. I am looking for one
additional paper, and one discussant.

An "ideal" paper would include movements or activities outside North
America.

I should also note this is not solely historical--as many readers of these
lists know\and have argued forcefully, colonialism is not over, so papers
could be historical or contemporary, or both.

Should I be blessed with more papers than I can accommodate, I will pass
them along to the other indigenous panels being organized.

Note non Sociologist can present at ASA.

Please respond directly to me, tom hall :

thanks,
tom

SPECIAL SESSION:

> Global Perspectives on Indigenous Peoples Movements against and
> Resistance to Colonialism
>
> ABSTRACT: Indigenous movements against colonialism and
> resistence to colonization have long co-existed with European
> expansion. Too often they have been studied within the context
> of one colonial power, or even one derived nation-state. Much of
> their timing, forms, success, and trajectories however has been
> shaped by global forces. This panel will gather 3 or 4 papers
> that address this issue. It will feature one, or possibly two
> discussants, who while sympathetic to the enterprise, are not
> closely familiar with it. The idea being that the discussant[s]
> will translate and underscore the value of the approaches in the
> papers for general sociological issues, and help listeners see
> the importance of indigenous peoples in sociological research and
> theorizing.
