Dear Oreste:

The following texts have have helped me to historicize
the concept of globalization, whilst remaining
agnostic as to whether "globalization" constitutes the
best description of contemporary capitalism.

1. Arrighi's recent article on "Globalization, State
Sovereignty, and the 'Endless' Accumulation of
Capital"
(a version of which appears on the Braudel Center
website). [Chaos and Governance in the Modern World
System (1999) also examines the literature on
globalization.] Incidentally, Arrighi offers an
interesting argument concerning the shift from the
'paradigm of imperialism' to the 'paradigm of
globalization.'

2. Samir Amin's Capitalism in the Age of Globalization
(1998). [Spectres of Capitalism (1998) also touches on
the globalization debate.]

3. Saskia Sassen's Losing Control? Sovereignty in an
Age of Globalization (1996) and Globalization and Its
Discontents: New Essays on the Mobility of People and
Money (1998). Sassen seems to constitute one of the
touchstones in the globalization debate.

Good luck with your project.

Mark Frezzo
