ROWMAN & LITTLEFIELD ACQUIRES ALTAMIRA PRESS FROM SAGE PUBLICATIONS
Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group of Lanham, Maryland, is pleased to
announce the acquisition of the AltaMira Press division of Sage
Publications, Inc. for its Rowman & Littlefield Publishers operations,
adding to its list of scholarly imprints in the social sciences and
humanities.
AltaMira Press was founded in Walnut Creek, California, in 1995 as the
humanities unit of Sage, a Southern California-based social science
publisher. The imprint is named after Altamira Cave in Spain, the site
of
the first discovery of ancient cave art in the 19th century. In its four
years, AltaMira has built a list of almost 150 books for scholars,
advanced
college students, and professionals in anthropology, archaeology, museum
studies, history, religion, ethnic studies, cultural studies and other
fields, as well as publishing scholarly journals and professional
software.
AltaMira, still headed by its founder Mitch Allen, will continue to
actively seek important scholarly works, reference books, advanced
texts,
journals, and software in its current fields of publication. In
addition,
the imprint will begin working toward publishing serious non-fiction
trade
works and high-quality focused scholarly monographs in its fields.
Rowman &
Littlefield's distribution center will be accepting orders for AltaMira
books as of September 1999.
Notable among AltaMira's offerings is the highly-regarded professional
book
list of the American Association for State and Local History, Curator,
the
leading museum professional journal, and PastPerfect Museum Software,
the
most popular collections management software for museums. AltaMira also
has
one of the leading scholarly book lists in cultural anthropology and
archaeology including books by Ashley Montagu, Marvin Harris, Brian
Fagan,
Alfred Kroeber and William Foote Whyte.
Independently-owned Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, adds
AltaMira to
an extensive list of other scholarly publishing operations including
Rowman
& Littlefield Publishers, Scarecrow Press, Lexington Books, Ardsley
House,
