It is important that communists seek to understand the
character of developments in the Balkans with reference to Sebia and its Kosovan
province of Kosova.
Western imperialism led by the US has engaged in the bombing
of Serbia as a means of ensuring that in future Belgrade conducts itself in a
way that generally represents the interests of American imperialism in
particular and imperialism in general. In that way its policy of ensuring that
Central and Eastern Europe conducts itself in a way that is consistent with the
class interests of imperialism. US imperialism can consequently, with
greater ease and freedom, enhance the conditions necessary for profit
maximisation.
The NATO invasion of Serbia serves also as a warning to any
other potentially truculent countries both in Eastern Europe and elsewhere to
behave themselves. The invasion of Iraq by western imperialism was launched for
essentially similar reasons.
In this way this foreign policy of Washington is intended to
impose imperialist stability and conditions conducive towards the accumulation
of capital.
Tied in with the above analysis Western imperialism was
sought to prevent the Kosovan conflict developing into a much wider and
deeper conflict leading to the destabilisation of the entire region including
the destabilisation of Turkey, a member of NATO. Such a development would be of
enormous strategic significance for imperialism.
Furthermore had the Belgrade regime been left free to
thoroughly subjugate the Kosovan ethnic Albanians further instability would
have been introduced into the region. This would not have been conducive to
promoting the conditions for imperialist capital accumulation.
The cause of the NATO bombing is as straight forward as
this. NATO's bombing of Serbia had nothing to do with humanitarian or democratic
considerations. The latter are of merely ideological significance and are
designed to serve to distract attention from the real source of the savage
bombing --the accumulation of capital.
