Situation in Greece och NATO (fwd)

Here's a short report from a Greek journalist on the war in Yugoslavia.

The report has been translated to Swedish. I roughly re-translated it,
just to give you an idea of its contents.

USA har beslutat att området norr om den 39 breddgraden på Balkan är
krigsskådeplats. USA bestämmer att krig pågår på andra nationelstaters
område. Detta inkluderar hela Bulgarien, Rumänien, nästan hela Italien,
halva Grekland och en del av Turkiet.

<tr> The United States has decided that the area north of the 39th
parallel in the Balkans is a war zone. The USA has concluded that the war
has involved the territory of other nation states. This area includes
Bulgaria, Rumania, almost all of Italy, half of Greece, and a part of
Turkey.
 


I Grekland fortsätter oavbrutet protesterna mot NATO och USA. Utanför
många USA- och NATO-baser demonstrerar tusentals NATO-motståndare varje
dag. I Aktion, i nordvästra Grekland lyckades demonstraterna ta sig in på
NATO-basen genom att forcera hela ingången. I Thessalonikis hamn, där
NATO-trupper och material samlas och transporteras vidare till FYROM,
pågår dagliga blockader. 

<tr> In Greece uninterrupted protests against NATO and the United States
continue. Thousands of NATO opponents demonstrate each day outside several
US and NATO bases. In one action in northwest Greece, demonstrators
succeeded in entering a NATO base by forcing their way through the
entrance. In the Port of Salonika, where NATO troops and material are
gathered and transported to Fyrom, there are daily blockades.


Hamnarbetarförbundet och järnvägsanställdasförbund utlyste strejk för all
militär transport till krigsområdet. Många fackliga förtroendemän och
vanliga medlemmar i olika fackföreningar reser till Jugoslavien för att
vara "mänskliga sköldar" på broar och arbetsplatser för att visa sin
solidaritet med alla folkslag i Jugoslavien. I Grekland demonstrerar
greker och många albaner tillsammans mot NATO-bombningar. 

<tr> The Stevedore's Union and the Railway Workers Union announced a
strike covering all military transports to the war zone. Several union
representatives and ordinary members of various unions are travelling to
Yugoslavia to become "human shields" on bridges and job sites to show
their solidarity with all ethnicities in Yugoslavia. In Greece, Greeks and
many Albanians demonstrate together against the NATO bombings.

Bland värnpliktiga och officerare i den grekiska armén växer också
motståndet. Ett militärt fartyg, jägaren Themistokles, som ingår i
NATO-flottan för "övning" fick mycket kritik. Två marinsoldater och en
officer vägrade att följa med och de deklarerade att de inte skulle kriga
för NATO. Många andra soldater I Greklands armé, flotta och flyg
deklarerade också öppet att de ska göra samma sak. 

<tr>Opposition is growing in the Greek army among both drafted soldiers
and officers. A military vessel, the destroyer Themistokles, which
participated in a NATO navel exercise was harshly criticized. Three
sailors and an officer refused to report for duty. They declared that they
would not fight for NATO. Several other soldiers in Greece's army, navy,
and air force, declared openly that they would do the same thing.


Den grekiska regeringen försöker att tillsammans med USA:s ambasadör i
Aten, Nickolas Berns, påverka det negativa opinionsklimatet i grekiska
medier mot NATO:s och USA:s anfallskrig mot Jugoslavien, genom att säga
att grekiska medier inte är objektiva. De grekiska medierna köper inte
NATO-propaganda och skickar istället egna journalister till Jugoslavien. 
 
<tr>The Greek government together with the American ambassador in Athens,
Nicholas Berns, are trying to turn around the negative climate of opinion
in the Greek media against NATO's and the American war of aggression
against Yugoslavia. The government and the American representative are
saying that the Greek media is not objective. The Greek media isn't  
buying the NATO propoganda and, instead, are sending their own journalists
to Yugoslavia.
