    Friends,
    =20
Hello. I have become increasingly interested in long wave cycles. =
However, I am a unfamiliar with the various debates and approaches. In =
order to address this deficiency, I have volunteered to focus on the =
topic for a semester course I am taking. Could someone suggest some =
reading material that would aid me and get me started? I thank you in =
advance for your assistance. =20

This used to be one of the favorite topics at the VI eme section at =
the Sorbonne when Francois Braudel was director there. Not any longer - =
I gather much to my regret - still, it might be a sobering experience to =
take a glance at the true monuments of scholarship the `Annales' school =
produced in its golden ages in the fifties and sixties - they don't =
write books like that anymore.=20
   =20
Thus, starting from Braudel's three volume `Material Civilisation =
and Capitalism' which has been translated into English I would also urge =
you to take at least a glance at the two volumes (and what volumes !) of =
P.Chaunu's "Seville et l'Atlantique" dealing with the conjuncture - if =
you're very pressed for time you can take a look at the one-volume =
compression which has appeared in Spanish and French but with Chaunu it =
is not a good idea to be pressed for time.=20
   =20
Neither is it with Louis Dermigny's `L'Europe et la Chine au XVIII =
eme siecle' which is utterly forgotten nowadays while I think it is one =
of the great scholarly works of this century as is to some extent also =
the case with P.Villar's `La Catalone dans l'Espagne moderne'.=20
   =20
How rapidly scholarship is out of date by the way - wrongly often ! =
- we do not stand so much on the shoulders of our immediate ancestors =
from the 1950's as simply forget what they have written. As I write in =
my forthcoming book on modern British history: "social sciences and even =
mirable dictu history are nowadays as full with the words `new !' =
'renewed !' `brand new !' as advertisements for soap." =20
   =20
    Best wishes
    Dr. R.J. Barendse
