A few years ago my wife and I travelled across the Soviet Union by train,
plane, and Russian steamer from Paris to Yokohama. After a depressing time
in Moscow we had a fine time in Novisibirsk, and I commented on this to our
guide there. He said "Life in Siberia is wonderful. We are already in
Siberia. What can they do to us?"
