Thanks for the post, Steve.  If John Tierny turns his
analysis to the US elites, I'm sure he'd find an
extremley nepotistic country right here in the good
old US of A.  But given the fact that he has this idea
that the West is based on meritocratic ideals, his
knee-jerk reaction is to see nepotism as the property
of those distant others, somewhere faraway in a
different galaxy and belonging to a different
universe. This is also the view of all those academics
he cites, who see the world in museum-like terms.
