What the defense department isn't saying is that if the US finds itself fighting a counter-guerilla war in Iraq,  then US troops are going to have to operate a political program on top of fighting and operating under conditions of warfare.  That means US troops cannot be rotated every 6 months but have to become seasoned fighters, developing their survival instints over time.  So far,  the defense departments attempts to assuage the frustrated troops by making false promises to them about the date of their return home, has been a well publicized failure.

If the right wing of the US administration drags us into conflicts in Syria, N. Korean and Iran then the administration may find itself bogged down with "one, two, three Vietnams..."
