An old adage states that opportunity makes the thief.   So far,  half way through the term of George W. Bush,  the United States has illegally acquired another territory, equal in size to the continental US,  by laying claim to those areas of the sea floor, under international waters, which US commercial interests believe may one day be economically profitable.  That's an exercise in raw imperialism.  Once upon a time,  imperialist powers sent explorers off to distant rivers to navigate, survey the land and plant the flag.  Let's face facts,  it's deplorable that the US wishes to drag the naked relic of imperialism into the 21c.   Unfortunately, the British,  the US's chief ally in WWII, also see fit to join in the long awaited endeavor now that their chief rival in the USSR has collapsed.  For decades, many on the left believed that the USSR was a bulwark against the global imperialism of the capitalist class, I guess it's fair to say the old left knew the capitalist class in spite of the latters protestations of selfless service to the cause of freedom and democracy.
