In the struggle against apartheid in South Africa (1960s to 1990s), the
academics of the South African "core" were mostly conformist with the
official policies of the government. It was not in their material
interest to lose their jobs or ruin their career chances, and many
actually agreed with those policies. I see a parallel between that and
the present global situation.
