Inequality list (fwd)

Here's a quick response to Cliff Staples' request for "stuff" on
"globalization" for his inequality class. I'm responding quickly because
1) Cliff recently did a review for SOCIAL PROBLEMS, and 2) I happened to
have an e-mail that I sent about a month ago to one of my colleagues here
who was compiling a list of readings for an "Inequality" list for our PhD
students. I'm posting to the listserv so that other folks can chime in
and not just duplicate previous suggestions (it seems like this might be a
topic of fairly general interest for those of us who teach). The two
books that I list (by Braun and Sassen) would both be very accessible for
undergraduates. (At the risk of being accused of shameless "marketing," I
would also add that my THIRD WORLD CITIES IN GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE, Westview,
1996, is being used in undergrad classes, too. Two more generic books for
undergrads: if you want a "culturalist" perspective on globalization) THE
SOCIOLOGY OF THE GLOBAL SYSTEM by Leslie Sklair might be useful: there is
also a recent Pine Forge book by Phil McMichael on DEVELOPMENT AND SOCIAL
CHANGE: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE, 1996.) The following list was VERY SHORT
for a reason: we were trying to limit this "Inequality" field exam list
to 50 entries (!):

Subject: Inequality list

Dear Matt:

...

Here are a very few suggestions for comparative stuff:

The best, quick and dirty source (but not at all a "classic") is a book
called THE RICH GET RICHER: THE RISE OF INCOME INEQUALITY IN THE UNITED
STATES AND THE WORLD by Denny Brown. Nelson Hall, 1997 (2nd Edition).
(It's really an advanced "text" but would be an excellent compendium for
grad students.) Other (rather essential) suggestions:

Korzeniewicz, Roberto and Timothy Moran. 1997. "World-Economic Trends in
the Distribution of Income, 1965-1992." AMERICAN JOURNAL OF SOCIOLOGY 102
(4) 1000-1039.

Rubinson, Richard. 1976. "The World-Economy and the Distribution of Income
within States; A Cross-National Study." AMERICAN SOCIOLOGICAL REVIEW
41:638-659.

Bornschier, Volker and Christopher Chase-Dunn. 1985. "Stratification in
the World-System." Chapter 1 in TRANSNATIONAL CORPORATIONS AND
UNDERDEVELOPMENT. Praeger. (This is a short book that does empirical
explorations of TNCs and development/inequality. I would suggest all of
it, but I don't want to "load up" the list.)

Sassen, Saskia. 1994. "New Inqualities Among Cities," and "New
Inequalities Within Cities." Chapters 3 and 6 of CITIES IN A WORLD
ECONOMY. Pine Forge Press. (A GREAT little book from Pine Forge -- I've
just pulled out the two most relevant chapters to inequality.)

cheers,
