_Capital and Coercion: The Economic and Military
Processes That Have Shaped the World-Economy 1800-1990_. by Jeff
Kentor, 2000, New York: Garland Publishing, Inc.

This empirical study explores the shifting economic and military
dynamics that have generated and maintained a relative hierarchy of
countries in the world-economy between 1800-1990. This discussion is
framed within Tilly’s conceptualization of the origins of modern
nation-states as a convergence of economic power held by cities and
military power controlled by states. These dimensions of economic and
military power are quantified, and a composite measure of position in
the world-economy is constructed for all available countries from 1900
to 1990. These measures are used to explore the paths of national
mobility, stability and hegemony over time. The book concludes with the
estimation of a structural equation model that examines the changing
relationships among economic power, military power and global dependence

between 1910 and 1990.
