This seminar is designed to help educators explore the relationship of education to social justice. Together with colleagues from various disciplines and educational institutions who share your commitment to globalizing curricula and educating for social change, you will have the opportunity to discuss and experience educational models which integrate social justice perspectives. $965 including room and board, all program costs, interpretation, ground transportation. This price does not include airfare to and from Mexico. > HUMAN RIGHTS AND INDIGENOUS ISSUES IN GUATEMALA May 16-25, 2000 This seminar will visit both Guatemala City and the highlands. Focus will be upon contemporary issues facing Guatemalans, including the peace process; the economic crisis; and the struggles of indigenous peoples for land and cultural integrity. $1,645, including room and board, all program costs, ground transportation, and round-trip airfare from Dallas. HAITI AND CUBA: DISTINCT NEIGHBORS May 28 – June 12, 2000 Explore the approaches of Haiti and Cuba to issues of food, security, political participation, health care, race/class, workers’ rights, foreign investment, and more. Learn about their political and cultural histories, traditions, and hopes for the future. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience societies in transition and to understand the context in which our island neighbors. This trip is open to all who qualify for an educational or research travel license to Cuba. $2,950, including program, language interpretation, housing, all meals, local transportation, and airfare from Houston. ELECTIONS 2000: SHAPING MEXICO'S FUTURE June 26 to July 3, 2000 Be an independent elections observer for the Mexican elections that may prove to be the most democratic that Mexico has ever had, with several strong opposition parties posing a real threat to the more than 70-year rule of a single party. Join this seminar and hear from many sectors of society regarding critical social, political, and economic issues including Mexico’s massive foreign debt, democracy, increasing militarization in Chiapas, ongoing human rights violations, women’s rights, indigenous autonomy, environmental protection, and sustainable development. $795, including program, language interpretation, housing, all meals, and local transportation.
