I would also add Isaac Deutscher to this list, including his works:
Stalin: A
Political Biography, and his 3 volume work on Trotsky, The Prophet Armed.
He joined
Polish Communist Party in 1927, was expelled in 1932 for opposition to the
Party line
on fascism, and later joined the Polish Socialist Party.
