A May Day in D.C.

I'm writing at the last minute to let you know that there is a May Day
march in Washington D.C. on May 1 that you might be interested in.
(There's also a smaller one in San Francisco). It's sponsored by the
Progressive Labor Party, the revolutionary communist group that has
generated a lot of controversy on the Left by being so blunt in its
critiques of capitalism, liberalism, nationalism, and socialists who
want to compromise with the capitalists. Many respect the way that PLP
does
"pull no punches" even if it seems a bit blunt to some people sometimes
in criticizing Clinton, Jesse Jackson, the liberal socialists, etc. They

are a grassroots outfit with lots of rank and file workers and youth
from all racial backgrounds. There will probably be about 2500 on the
march, probably 80% not members of PLP. It's not the biggest march
you've ever seen, but it is remarkable in its unity of purpose,
optimism, determination, and especially its multi-racial, international
working class character.

The march will assemble at Malcolm X Park on the northwest side near
Howard University at around noon. After a rally, the march will wind
through the Columbia Avenue district, with many immigrants from Africa
and Latin America, then past some offices and to the White House, (about

2 miles) finishing with a picnic at 3 pm in a park behind the White
House. The sight of hundreds of red flags in the hands of workers and
youth marching in front of the White House is something quite
remarkable. As the capitalists wage their wars all over the world and
continue to oppress workers, jail youth, create a dehumanized culture
and then use their own dehumanized creation to impose more restrictions
on workers and youth, it becomes all the more important to build a
militant, uncompromising, independent, working class-based opposition
movement.

The group has a police permit for the march. They've done it a number of

times before and don't expect any trouble this year. The media will, of
course,
probably censor any information about the march or downplay it...

If you are interested, you can contact PLP at 1-800-330-9953. (They also

have a website at plp@plp.org.)

There are buses leaving from Boston, NY, Philadelphia and Chicago. Or
you can just show up. You can march. You can just hang out from the
sidelines and watch. But at a time when so many are proclaiming not only

the death of marxism, but the end of class struggle and even the end of
human progress, it is quite a sight to see such a proud, public
affirmation of humankind's greatest attempt at liberating the world from

racism, sexism, fascism, war and all forms of class exploitation.
