Call for Papers

Special Focus on the State of the Humanities and Social Sciences
in Asia

The purpose of this special issue of the Southeast Asian Journal
of Social Sciences is to evaluate theoretical perspectives on
the state of the social sciences in Asia, such as Orientalism,
academic dependency theory, postcolonial criticism, etc., and to
critically appraise prescriptions for alternative social science
that have appeared in the form of decolonization of knowledge,
indigenization, and so on. These are alternative or non-Western
theoretical perspectives and concepts that have been generated
in the context of Asian societies. Some examples of such
alternatives, whether at the level of theoretical constructions,
empirical or applied social science should be given. The
question as to whether these alternatives are just as
ethnocentric as the Eurocentric perspectives they criticise
should be addressed as well.

The overall aim of this issue is to understand the state of the
social sciences in Asia, to critically assess alternative
discourses that have emerged, and to understand the
contributions that the academic communities in a number of Asian
countries have made to the whole question of alternative
discourses in the humanities and social sciences.

Papers will be referred and evaluated according to normal peer
review procedures. Contributors should follow the guidelines
for submission published in each issue of the journal.

The deadline for receiving manuscripts for this special issue is
1 June 1999. Three copies of the manuscript should be sent to:
