COSTA RICA: DEMOCRACY, ENVIRONMENT & PEACE
A Symposium at the University of Kansas
Thursday - Saturday, April 1-3, 1999
"A balanced discussion of the Costa Rican experience in promoting
democracy, environmental stewardship, and peace."
This symposium will explore the reputation Costa Rica enjoys for success
in establishing democratic processes, developing an environmental
consciousness, and promoting peace and human rights. Because internal
and external challenges occasionally threaten this commitment, it is
important to understand what factors and policies have contributed to
the country's unique experience in these three areas.
The symposium's goal is to achieve a balanced and dispassionate view of
the Costa Rican experience. Some presenters may laud aspects of Costa
Rica's record and suggest how it might be adapted elsewhere in Latin
America and beyond; others may focus on the country's weaknesses and
failures. The result should be a nuanced understanding of Costa Rica's
unusual accomplishments and the lessons that might be drawn for the
wider world. Former President Oscar Arias has agreed to be the keynote
speaker.
Because of the depth and breadth of the 40-year University of
Kansas/Universidad de Costa Rica connection (the oldest such cooperative
program in the hemisphere) we anticipate a large audience from the KU
community and the public. Register now!
