On this point, there was an interesting article in the Science Times of
the NYT about two weeks ago. Can't remember the scientists name, but he
suggested that if all the animals in the world immediately went extinct,
it would have virtually no impact on the microbial system, which was
already around for about 2 billion years before animals, anyway. But if
the
microbes suddenly died out, we would all immediately die. Kind of puts
the whole world system in perspective, no?
