Subject: Graduate Programme at the University of Leeds, UK

The Department of Politics at the University of Leeds, United
Kingdom, has recently established a Program in International
Politics and Political Economy (PIPPE), the Director of which is
Professor Philip G. Cerny.

PIPPE has set up a new MA in International Political Economy which
will be taught starting in Autumn 1996, and we would like to invite
applications. Some details are provided below. For further
information and application forms, please write to: Director of
Admissions, MA in International Political Economy, Department of
Politics, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, United Kingdom.

We also welcome applicants to a PhD programme by research.
Inquiries should be sent to Dr. Ray Bush, Graduate Director,
Department of Politics, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, United
Kingdom.

(Professor Cerny will be away from 27 March 1996, but will be
available to answer informal inquiries about the MA or PhD by email
before that date or *after 8 May 1996* only, on:
p.g.cerny@leeds.ac.uk. In the meantime, any faculty members or
graduate students who would like to speak to him will be able to find
him at the Annual Meeting of the International Studies Association,
San Diego, CA, 16-20 April 1996.)

The MA in International Political Economy is part of a wider
development linking different study and research fields in the
Department of Politics, as well as in related centres and
institutes. The Department's commitment to International Politics and
Political Economy is reflected in the appointment of four new faculty
members in this field in the past four years, including the
establishment of a Chair in IPE held by Professor Cerny, who
specializes in IR/IPE theory and the politics of financial
globalization.

The Department of Politics is one of the larger departments in the
United Kingdom; as a whole, Politics includes 24 full-time,
"research-active" faculty members (as declared on the national
Research Assessment Exercise).

Others directly involved in PIPPE are: Simon Bromley (US power, the
oil and energy industries, IPE theory, Middle East Politics);
Christine Margerum (politics of trade and industrial policy in the
US, Germany and Japan, especially the semiconductor industry);
Rhiannon Vickers (Britain in the IPE, labor and trade unions in the
international context, the political economy of the Postwar Era).

Also contributing to the program are several faculty who teach on
the MA in the Politics of International Resources and Development in
the Department of Politics (associated with PIPPE) as well as on MAs
taught in other linked centers and institutes within the University
such as the Institute for Communications Studies, the Center for
European Studies, the Center for Development Studies, the Center for
Industrial Policy and Performance, the Institute for International
Studies (which specializes in security studies), etc.

The course lasts 12 months full-time and 2 years part-time. It
consists of six course "modules":

1. Wealth and Power in the Global Political Economy: An
Introduction (compulsory core module)

2. *Either* a second core module, International Politics in an Age
of Interdependence, *or* one of the core modules chosen from a
cognate MA program (this list currently includes MAs in the Politics
of International Resources and Development, Industrial Policy and
Performance, Communications Studies, European Studies, and
International Studies)

3 and 4. Two optional modules chosen from the following list: The
Politics of Trade and Industry in an Interdependent World; Money
and Finance in the Global Era; The United States in the Modern
World Order; Europe in an Interdependent World; The Political
Economy of the Middle East; The Political Economy of Asia; or one
of several approved optional modules offered on cognate MA programs
(see above)

5 and 6. (Double module) Research Methods and Dissertation

The University of Leeds, founded in 1874, is one of Britain's main
civic universities, and is also the largest single-site university in
the country with over 20,000 students, 4,500 of whom are
postgraduates and almost 3,000 from overseas. There are faculties of
Arts, Economics and Social Studies, Education, Engineering, Law,
Medicine and Dentistry, and Science. The University has a very large
library (over 2.5 million items), and is very close to the main
repository of the British Library, only a few miles away at Boston
Spa. The University also has cutting-edge computing facilities,
including the library's Networked Database Service. The University
itself is located on a 140-acre hillside campus, free of through
traffic and only a short walk from the city centre. The Students'
Union offers a vast range of social clubs, societies, and shops, as
well as excellent leisure facilities and welfare services.

The City of Leeds is one of Britain's leading centres of both old and
new industries. It has a population of 700,000 in the city itself
and 2 million in the surrounding region. It is situated in the
middle of Britain, with excellent rail and motorway links to London
and the rest of the country, and an international airport. Leeds is
a fast-regenerating, cosmopolitan urban area with major theatres,
opera, and concert venues, a nationally-renowned club and music
scene, and old and new museums including a national museum of popular
music and the National Armouries museum of the history of warfare
which has moved to Leeds from the Tower of London. It is a very
"green" city, with plenty of parks and open spaces, and is close to
the Yorkshire Dales (including Bronte country) and the North York
Moors National Park.
