Excellent!! As I've been trudging through Empire: How Spain became a world power by Henry Kamen, I've been struck by the similarities between Spain and the US. Now that I'm nearing the end, there is the interesting point that the Spanish empire was kept aloft for an extra hundred years or two by other powers who benefited from it. My only quarrel with E. Todd is his comment that the only power that matters now is economic power. I think cultural power matters even more. Despite its amazing distribution networks for its cultural industries, the US is declining in both ways. Steven Sherman
