I would say that the United States and Britain are the intellectual authors behind the real looting as well as the acts of arson.   Why would two so-called civilized nations engage in such acts of barbarity and cruel thuggery?  It's plain and simple:  They are attempting to eraze from the popular memory of the Iraqi people their collective cultural heritage.  The United States free market approach has often been described as a *cultural acid bathe*.    The Iraqi people have a rich, deep culture that the US was interested in eradicating in order to replace it with something else,  McDonalds, Taco Bell,  Rap,  Led Zeppelin,  Starbucks and an American consumer mindset. The US is interested in breaking the ties that bind Iraqi people together.  The Museums have been looted through the connivance if not foreplanning of some in the know within the Defense Department.  I'm betting on the later.  The records of items within the museums have been deliberately incinerated in the hopes that without documented proof that the items were once housed in the museum one could then argue that they were not stolen from the museum in any future dispute.  No one person or small group of individuals took it upon themselves to go from building to building destroying records.  The United States bused in many people from outside Iraq into the country. Who among those *refugees* were  instructed in how to and directed to set these buildings aflame?   You cannot hide the truth forever.
