World Institute for Development Economics Research (WIDER)
Helsinki, Finland

WIDER is a leading research centre of the United Nations University, based
in Helsinki Finland. It conducts advanced research in development economics.
Its research is expected to meet the highest technical standards and to be
relevant to the policy concerns of the developing and transition countries.
WIDER's research findings are disseminated globally through the Institute's
extensive network of contacts in the UN system, the donor community,
developing country governments and civil society.

WIDER is seeking to appoint a number of project directors to assist with its
ambitious research programme over the coming years. Immediate openings are
available for suitable researchers interested in international migration;
globalization and its impact on poor countries and poor people; public and
private transfers to households; and the economics of water resources. Draft
proposals are also invited on important topics within any of the core areas
covered by WIDER, including inequality, poverty, and human development;
macroeconomic policy for developing countries; international trade, finance,
and growth; and the economics of conflict.

WIDER welcomes applications from researchers in developing and transition
countries, and from female researchers.

Applicants should keep the following points in mind:

Projects should conform to WIDER's objectives and methods of implementation.

In implementing research projects, WIDER selects a project director or
co-directors who work in close consultation and under contract with the
Institute. Project directors or co-directors are normally expected to have a
PhD in development economics or a related field, publications in leading
academic journals etc. Previous experience of running research projects is
also an asset.
Project directors and co-directors are normally expected to spend time at
the Institute in Helsinki. This may include short visits (one to two weeks)
or extended periods of time (up to 6 months of the year). Depending on the
project and circumstances, it may be possible to offer appointment as a
full-time resident WIDER research fellow.
WIDER is not itself a funding agency. WIDER will not normally consider
proposals to which other institutes or funding agencies are committing, or
expected to commit, major funding or which hold the copyright of the
resulting research output.
WIDER projects take a variety of alternative forms. For example: work by a
team of selected researchers on an overall theme (teams range between 2-3
people to 10-20 and above) or an open Call for Papers. Project researchers
are brought together in project meetings or through the large development
conferences which WIDER holds twice a year. In exceptional circumstances,
single-authored research on a project theme may be considered. WIDER does
not normally provide direct support to major fieldwork such as data
collection or ongoing surveys.
The resulting research output is initially made available in the Institute's
discussion paper series (downloadable from www.wider.unu.edu). The final
output is published, after due refereeing, in the WIDER series with selected
publishers (at present mainly Oxford University Press and Palgrave) or in
leading academic journals.
WIDER pays close attention to the fullest possible dissemination of its
research findings, through the UN system, donor agencies and in developing
countries. Project directors are expected to contribute to dissemination
meetings and material (including WIDER Policy Briefs and the Institute's
newsletter, WIDER Angle).
Potential applicants should also note that:

WIDER does not provide funding for academic courses or research degrees.
A separate sabbatical and PhD internship programme is available for
qualified researchers wishing to spend time undertaking research at the
Institute's premises in Helsinki. Funding is available for successful
applicants, with priority given to those from developing and transition
economies.
WIDER regularly posts Calls for Papers for selected conferences and project
meetings at its Web site (www.wider.unu.edu). Funding is available for
successful applicants to participate in these events, with priority given to
those from developing and transition economies.
An outline summary of the proposal (2-5 pages) together with the curriculum
vitae of the main researchers should be sent via email to:
projects2003@wider.unu.edu, or via fax (358 9 6159 9333), by 15 February
2003.

An acknowledgement of the application's receipt will be sent after the
closing date. WIDER will then contact researchers whose projects best fit
the Institute's objectives.

Research is conducted by a Helsinki-based resident research staff of about
15 senior researchers and visiting fellows, some four Ph.D. interns, and a
support staff of 14 members.

An external network including 6-8 external project directors, each located
at their university or institute, and over 300 network members around the
world, who contribute to the ongoing projects. This group includes research
staff from the UNU, UN and Bretton Woods institutions including FAO, ILO,
IMF, UNCTAD, UNDP, UNICEF and World Bank. This cooperation ensures a broader
political constituency and leads to a wider dissemination of the policy
findings.

Five Nobel Prize laureates as well as several scholars occupying key policy-
making positions in both developing and transitional economies have
contributed to the Institute's research.

Visiting scholars and UN staff members on mini-sabbaticals working on
research topics related to the Institute's programme, participating on a
rotational basis for 2-6 month periods.

A world-wide network of associated institutions that focus on issues related
to the work of WIDER. Research activities are supported by the WIDER library
with its collection of about 8,500 books and 200 subscriptions to relevant
journals and working paper series.
