REQUEST FOR PAPERS
Session on:
The Coming Collapse of American
"Democracy":
The Unfinished Business of the Cold War?
It is more than a decade since the collapse of Soviet
"Communism" and the USSR. Various contributions to
literature and film (e.g., cyberpunk), criticism (e.g., Rorty) and
social science (e.g., Wallerstein) have suggested that the next couple
of decades could see the collapse of liberal "democracy" in
the United States, and perhaps even the collapse of the U.S. itself.
Submissions are invited which consider this hypothesis. How plausible
is it? How might it play out? What would be its consequences, for the
U.S., its neighbours, the world? If the dangers are obvious, what
opportunities might it offer, and what strategies might allow us to
seize them?
Deadline for submissions (abstracts or papers): January 30,
