chase-dunn also has a new chapter in "the handbook of sociological theory" (2002), edited by john turner.  it is a great, somewhat comprehensive, and relatively short read.  also, there is the "world-systems reader", edited by tom hall, that has some rather accessible and decent reviews.  i usually refer others to those two as starting points.

Chapters 1 and 2 of Chase Dunn and Boswell's Spiral of Capitalism and Socialism, while not exactly comprehensive, offer a good summary and interpretation of world systems literature (plenty of useful references, of course).
