education stats?

I was wondering if anyone has statistics on how much it would cost to make higher education free in the U.S. I'm putting together ideas to build a case for this, and so any information on transferring military expenditures and cutting corporate welfare as possible sources of freeing up funds to implement such a policy would be helpful. Also, I was thinking of incorporating European education models as comparisons but I don't know much about them, so I'm hoping to find some resources involving that aspect.
