The psychological impact of the Intifada on Palestinian children in the
occupied West Bank and Gaza: an exploratory study

Abstract

The mental health of 796 Palestinian children living in the occupied
West Bank and Gaza Strip was assessed in terms of reported psychological
status and behavioral symptoms. Results, interpreted within the context
of the 1987 uprising, indicate that exposure to political and military
violence may be associated with the onset of conduct problems and fears,
although active participation in the conflict may enhance self-esteem
and shield children from development of psychological symptoms.
