WHAT IS HAPPENING IN TURKEY?

If you saw on the TV, Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit was in White House last week. He told with Bush about the possibility of an Iraq operation.

Turkish government is very careful about a military intervention to Iraq after the war because Turkish economy effected very negatively from it in contrast with promises of the USA.  Also, EU pushes Turkey to reduce the size of its military forces in order to reach an acceptable economic level for EU. Also USA supports this policy and maybe it can be said that this is an USA policy.

Basically, USA wants a stable and powerful alley in the Middle East, which has an economic stability and has not so big human rights scandals. (Everyone knows Kurdish people in the Southeast of the Turkey) Moreover, after S11, a Muslim alley in the region becomes more critical for the USA.

Two years ago, USA made a critical action for Turkey and arrested Abdullah Ocalan for Turkey. This was the end of military spending- no more need for this. Then Turkey could behave according to EU criterions to become a member of EU which would be a representative of the USA.

But this was not easy for the Turkey. First, army don’t want to give up its control over state. Also economy is very bed to rescue.

IMF offered policies and World Bank gave credits. One of the World Bank managers became the economy minister. Last year, Turkish economy was very very worse than Argentina.

Up to now, we cannot see any improvement in the economy, indeed up to S11 and “war against terrorism”. Dollar started to fall down, economy gives positive signs.

On the other hand, there is nothing between USA and Turkey circulating or happening. No money from USA and also no direct support from Turkey to Afghan operation or Iraq possibility. No any solid steps through the EU criterions such as a more democratic state. During the interview with Ecevit in White House, a journalist asked him about the book of Chomsky which was accused with divisive act by state security court and about the 800 people who wants education in Kurdish but arrested because of that. He simply said nothing.

What is going on is a real bargaining. And a lot of psychological affect to market.

My opinion is that improvements of the last days come from the multinational corporations who demand stability in the economy. Is this true?  I don't know too much economy but if so, it can return a worse position with another speculation. This is also imaginary.
