there are norms about the treatment of war prisoners. progressives in the
U.S. should make sure that Afghan prisoners are not mistreated by our
government. we can not expect human treatment without pressure from
civilians who live in the heart of the empire.

certain distopian works become important in these troubled times. 1984,
BRAVE NEW WORLD and NAKED LUNCH come to mind.

Rights Groups Concerned Over Taliban Prisoners Held at U.S. Navy Base

by Jim Lobe
Human rights groups are expressing concern about the treatment being
accorded Taliban and al-Qaeda prisoners who are being transported from
Afghanistan to a United States naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Twenty prisoners--photographed with hoods over their heads and shackles
on their arms and feet--were flown from a U.S. Marine Corps base in
southern Afghanistan Thursday via a C-17 transport plane, the first of
hundreds of prisoners expected to make the trip over coming days and
weeks.
