The Department of Africana Studies at the University of South Florida is
seeking your assistance in filling two faculty positions.  One is in African
American History, and the other is in African History (see Position
Announcements below).  The position in African History is being filled as
part of a special initiative.  The African History position requires
immediate response.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN AFRICAN HISTORY
Special Initiative Position

The University of South Florida, Department of Africana Studies, is
recruiting an outstanding junior- or mid-level African Historian for a
tenure-track position under a special USF Faculty Academic Enrichment
initiative.  The appointment will become effective August 2002; salary will
be commensurate with experience.  Minimum qualifications: Ph.D. in history
by date of employment to be appointed as Assistant Professor.  The area of
specialization within African history is open.  The ideal candidate will
have experience and an active research agenda with a comparative and
transnational perspective.  Courtesy appointment in USF's History Department
possible.

Send letter of application, curriculum vita, a sample of written work, and

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY
Position #3487

The University of South Florida, Department of Africana Studies, invites
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor appointment in African
American History.  The appointment will become effective August 2002; salary
will be commensurate with experience.  Responsibilities will include
teaching five courses (graduate and undergraduate) per academic year,
research and publication, and institutional and community service.  Minimum
qualifications: Ph.D. in history by date of employment to be appointed as
Assistant Professor; specialization in African American history;
demonstration of theoretical orientation; teaching experience; and
commitment to  interdisciplinarity.

The area of specialization within African American History is open.
However, priority will be given to applicants whose training and research
include any of the following: diaspora or Atlantic history; and economic
history.  The ideal candidate will have experience and an active research
agenda in comparative and transnational history of the African diaspora.

AFRICANA STUDIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA
The University of South Florida, part of the Florida State University
System, is ranked by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching
in the top tier of American universities - Doctoral/Research Extensive.  USF
is the principal public university for the Tampa Bay region, with more than
37,500 students and offering over 200 degree programs at all levels.  It is
second in research dollars of the 11 state universities.  USF's student body
is as divers as it's academic program profile, with students from every
state in the nation and 100 other countries.  The student body is comprised
of, among others, Caucasian (71%), African Americans (11%), Hispanic (9%),
Asian/Pacific (5%), Native American (1), and female (59).  

Africana Studies at USF is an interdisciplinary field of study offering the
B.A. and a M.A. degrees.  The Department seeks to distinguish itself by its
comparative diaspora and transnational perspectives, highlighting the
recognition that the African and Diasporan experiences are organically
linked with the history of the wider world.  The mission of the Department
is threefold:  to provide undergraduate and graduate students with a program
of liberal arts studies on the African and African Diasporan experience; 2)
to conduct research toward a comparative understanding of the history and
experience of people of African heritage in Africa and the Americas; and 3)
to use the expertise developed in the Department to offer service to the
local community, to the University of South Florida, and to faculty's
respective profession.
