Re: Two faces of the future of the world-system

Last summer I was reading a book by an anthropologist who talked about 
"social trances."  I found it very interesting, even though I have not had a 
chance to investigate this further.  Lately I've been wondering if there's a 
connection between capitalism and social trances, i.e., a cause/effect 
relationship.  I apologize, I realize this argument lacks epistemological 
stature.  I have no evidence to support this.  But when I hear about people 
cheering the U.S. government dropping bombs on Afghanistan, I can't help but 
wonder, Is everyone asleep?  Have our VCRs and electric garage-door openers 
and relentless over-consumption put us all into some kind of hypnotic state?
