George:

"IMPERIAL BRAIN TRUST" by Shoup & Minter, now long out of print on Monthly
Review Press, is still THE source on U.S. planning going into and coming
out of WWII -- documents the CFR's War and Peace Studies, which took over
the State Dept planning under FDR. Chomsky usefully summarizes this "Grand
Area Planning" in his "DETERRING DEMOCRACY" (Verson/1991).

William K. Tabb's new "THE AMORAL ELEPHANT" on MRP looks quite good
especially on international/global finance. Arthur MacEwan's "DEBT AND
DISORDER," on MRP (1990) is still the best I've seen on conscious
manipulation of financial levers, such as the petrodollar recycling in the
70s.

On the domestic side, don't forget Frank Donner on the repressive
apparatus -- if I remember correctly, he wrote a definitive book on the
FBI, and then another on the Red Squads.
