Secretary of State Colin L. Powell today identified Osama bin
Laden, the Islamic militant who has taken refuge in Afghanistan, as a prime
suspect in engineering the attacks against the World Trade Center and the
Pentagon.
Although Islamic extremists have been mentioned as possible
suspects in the attacks, and State Department officials have privately pointed
the finger at Mr. bin Laden, Secretary Powell's announcement was the first
public accusation of the Saudi exile by a top administration
official.
Attorney General John Ashcroft said today that investigators
were making progress in tracking down those involved in the attacks. He also
said that the hijackers had "significant ground support" and that the "number of
associates was significant." although he provided no details. Deputy Defense
Secretary Paul Wolfowitz spoke, too, of a "campaign, not a single action"
against terrorists and their sponsors.
In Germany, prosecutors said they
were investigating what they described as
an Islamic terrorist cell in
Hamburg that could have been involved in the terrorist strikes in the United
States.
As rescuers in New York continued their somber searches in the
still-smoldering rubble of the World Trade Center, President Bush declared
today, "We have just seen the first war of the 21st century."
"Now that a
war has been declared on us," the President said after speaking by telephone
with Governor George E. Pataki and Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, "we will lead the
world to victory, to victory." ....
