NY Times: By threatening military force, Iran focused new attention on the
simmering dispute over how to carve up the resources of the Caspian among the
five nations bordering the inland sea - Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and
Turkmenistan. The Iranians are arguing for a greater share than the former
Soviet republics are willing to give.
Karl: The Caspian rich in oil may prove to be another flashpoint because it
contains abundant quantities of black gold. Russia and the US are keeping a
watchful eye on events there. Much of Washington' regional strategy there
underscores its concern as to who is to own, control, distribute and process
these oil resources. Obviously its strategy is to acquire as much ownership and
control over it as possible.

Karl Carlile
