Recent Systems Dynamics Models of the World?

In the 1970s, the Club of Rome published the "Limits of Growth" model, a
formal systems dynamics model of the world system. It was premised on only 4
stocks: population, pollution, capital, and natural resources.  An updated
version of the model was produced in 1991.

Does anyone know of any similar formal, mathematical, rigorous world systems
modelling efforts over the last 10 years? I would be interested in attempts
to model both the present, and any empires/systems in the past.

(If anyone is interested, a simplified version of the updated model is
available with the free version of Vensim simulation software at
www.vensim.com)
