Afghanistan and Masculanity by KSamman 30 March 2001 00:05 UTC |

Krishnendu, thanks for that excellent piece on Afghanistan,
A quick reflection on the article: The article looks at the present context of the sanctions against Afghanistan and the impact they have had on the perceptions of the people on other cultures. The feeling of anger at the world leads to resentment and hatred, and when people and leaders feel powerless they look for the most obnoxious ways to get attention. Its like the issue of masculinity and violence amongst working class youths: powerlessness leads to expressions that the middle class feels to be offensive (of course, the masculinity in the hands of the rich is rarely analyzed). It would be a nice comparison to take the cultural expressions of inner city youths and compare them to repressed populations in other contexts, one from "internal colonialism" and the other from "external colonialism" (except using better concepts).
