A few recent posts have mentioned the relative lack of discussion of these
issues in world-system analysis.  At the risk of self-promotion (and
running a little against the grain, perhaps, of some WSNers who seem to
primarily read other posts and not books), I would humbly offer our edited
book, STATES AND SOVEREIGNTY IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY (edited by David Smith,
Dorothy Solinger and Steven Topik).  It's a collection of essays from a
conference held in 1997 that addresses the "decline of the state" issue
from some interdisciplinary perspectives (the editors are a sociologist,
political scientist and historian).  Essay authors include Wallerstein,
Arrighi, Saskia Sassen, etc.  Might be relevant to some of the current
debates...
