States and Sovereignty by David Smith 11 January 2001 16:34 UTC |

A few recent posts have mentioned the relative lack of discussion of these issues in world-system analysis. At the risk of self-promotion (and running a little against the grain, perhaps, of some WSNers who seem to primarily read other posts and not books), I would humbly offer our edited book, STATES AND SOVEREIGNTY IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY (edited by David Smith, Dorothy Solinger and Steven Topik). It's a collection of essays from a conference held in 1997 that addresses the "decline of the state" issue from some interdisciplinary perspectives (the editors are a sociologist, political scientist and historian). Essay authors include Wallerstein, Arrighi, Saskia Sassen, etc. Might be relevant to some of the current debates... dave smith sociology, uc-irvine
