There is a new sociology intro text with a globalization bent being published
by Pine Forge Press, Sociology for a New Century by York Bradshaw
and Joseph Healey. It should be out in February. The first
half of the book gives students the basic sociological tools using globalization
to discuss, theory, methods, and research, as well as basic topical issues
of culture, inequality, gender, family, crime and punishment, and economics
and politics. The second half book present topical issues such as
war, work, global health care, to give students a chance to see the practical
application of Sociology and be able to continue asking critical
questions about the implications an increasingly interconnected global
world for themselves, for other members of U.S. society, and for
members of societies throughout the world. From the very first chapter,
students are challenged to be aware of the core/periphery biases that the
U.S. has concerning itself, that there are different, yet equally valid
ways of interacting in the world, and there are serious implications for
peoples living in global, increasingly "modernized" world. I think it's
a great way to teach intro.
