Job Announcement:

Project Director,
Silicon Valley Environmental Health and Justice Project

Silicon Valley Toxics Coalition and the Santa Clara Center for Occupational
Safety and Health have initiated a four-year project funded in part by the
National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). The
project's goal is to raise community understanding about environmental and
occupational health issues, and to link residents and workers with health
care providers and researchers to identify, reduce and prevent exposure to
hazardous chemicals. Other partners include the UC Berkeley School of
Public Health, San Jose State University and the Santa Clara County Public
Health Department. 

Job Responsibilities: 

1. Organize a community and worker-based Environmental Health and Justice
Project Board to set objectives and prioritize strategies to prevent
exposure to hazardous chemicals. Coordinate and facilitate regular meetings
of this Project Board, providing an overall sense of mission and direction
to the project as a whole. 

2. Collaborate with health professionals and research scientists to
implement project objectives and strategies, including a research component
to reduce and prevent exposure to toxic chemicals. 

3. Oversee an educational campaign, including written materials, training
sessions and media outreach to raise public and worker awareness about
toxic exposures and health preventive actions that can be taken. 

4. Promote new policies and institutional changes based on project outcomes
and research findings. 

5. Direct and supervise other project staff, and work cooperatively with
SVTC and SCCOSH staff and other partners to meet the project's
administrative and budget requirements.

Qualifications: 

· Proven success at program planning, budget and project management, with a
minimum of 3-5 years experience designing and managing multi-level
community programs, including supervision of other staff. 
· Proven ability to facilitate partnerships among diverse organizations,
creating a broad-based team. 
· Demonstrated ability to work well with people from diverse economic,
ethnic and educational backgrounds. 
· Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience creating
public education programs is a plus. 
· Background in health care, health education and/or public relations very
helpful. An M.P.H. is a plus. 
· Excellent organizational skills, including time management and record
keeping. Good computer skills. 
· Familiarity with Santa Clara County and its various ethnic communities is
a plus. 
· Spanish, Vietnamese or other language skills are a plus. People of color
are especially encouraged to apply.

     Compensation: Annual salary $39,000-$45,000 depending on experience.
