Griffiths on Optimal Population

Dear WSNers: Tom Griffiths writes that: " population and a whole lot of
other issues linked to our current capitalist world-system, are at
the heart of our efforts to create a world socialist alternative. ie.
it's more than just a "dream", it's action to realise an alternative.
This way of thinking, based in action, seems more positive than just
labelling something as "utopian" and proclaiming that it won't
happen. Who knows the limits of the next world
      system?"

But surely we must make at least informed "guesstimates" if we are do do
social policy rationally. My point was that while Austin's proposal
requires a wholesale, and in my view, implausible, change in the way
society is organized (it sounds like communism after the withering
away of the state--so even in Marxist terms it is two major steps
away from where we are), my view is that it is better to look for
"levers" (such as population size)in the world system that can be
manipulated to produce a better result.
