----------
The Starbucks Fair Trade Campaign

Starbucks is the largest retailer of gourmet coffee in the country,
operating a fifth of all cafes nationwide. They say that they "are very
supportive of fair-trade coffee" (Wall Street Journal, 11/23/99) but they
have yet to offer Fair Trade Certified coffee to their customers! Although
they are making millions of dollars in corporate profits ($164 million last
year), most farmers who produce the coffee that made them rich are still
getting by on poverty wages. Most coffee farmers around the world get as
little as $.50 per pound for coffee that retails for up to $10 per pound!

Let them know that as the coffee industry leader, they have the
responsibility to offer consumers what we want and coffee farmers what they
deserve--Fair Trade Certified coffee! Fair Trade means a living wage - a
minimum of $1.26 per pound - paid to organized farmer cooperatives - not
plantation owners - in 20 countries around the world.

We demand that they offer consumers the choice to buy Fair Trade Certified
coffee at every one of their 2300 stores nationwide, plus about 500 colleges
- permanently (not just as a media stunt!) We demand that they implement
their own Code of Conduct to independently monitor that coffee workers are
paid a living wage.

Please join us in launching a national campaign this April 13 to demand that
Starbucks offer its customers the choice to buy Fair Trade Certified coffee.
