11th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE OF HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHERS

=46irst call for papers. Deadline: June 30th, 2000.

The 11th ICHG will be held in Quebec City (Canada) on August 12-18, 2001.
This triennial conference, held recently in Ulster (1998), Perth (1995),
and Vancouver (1992), is the largest meeting in the field. The 2001
conference will focus on the following themes:

1.      Imperial and colonial historical geographies
2.      Historical geographies of the city
3.      Environmental change
4.      Natural and cultural heritage
5.      Landscape(s) of collective memories
6.      The historical geography of leisure and recreation

N.B.: This list is not exclusive and contributions on other aspects of
historical geography are also welcomed.

Submissions for entire sessions as for single papers are encouraged. In
addition to faculty members, a special welcome is extended to graduate
students and independent scholars.

HOW TO SUBMIT PROPOSALS

Proposals for papers or sessions should be submitted by e-mail to

Proposals for a single paper should include the following information:

Abstract (200 words maximum)
Special requirements regarding audiovisual equipment


Proposal for a session should include the following information:

Name of the session co-ordinator

Phone and fax numbers
E-mail address
Topic or issue of the session
Name of each contributor and the same details as requested above.


Session or paper proposals must be sent before June 30, 2000. It will be
possible to update the abstracts before the printing of the final program
(Spring 2001).

In addition to the papers sessions, the program includes three field
excursions:

1. A half-day Old Quebec City excursion.

2. An optional one-day tour: The rural landscape of Kamouraska (South shore 
=
of
the Saint Lawrence estuary) OR the Beauce region (typical semi-urban region
South of Quebec City).

3. An optional post-conference field trip will also be available: Mythic
Charlevoix and the =ECKingdom=EE of Saguenay: Shared landscapes and regional
identities.


REGISTRATION

N. B.: further information about registration and accommodations will be

to all applicants.

Deadline: 1 March 2001, confirmed by a non-refundable deposit.

Conference fee: CDN $195 (deposit $100). For graduate students/Retired: CDN
$95 (deposit $50). There will be a surcharge of $50 for late registration
(after 1 March 2001). Full payment is due by June 30, 2001.

The fee covers registration, programmes, the Old Quebec City field trip, and
coffee-break service. The banquet is optional, as are the one-day and the
post-conference field excursions. Payment can be made either by cheque or by
credit card (Master Card or VISA).


ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation is available from either Laval University Residence Service
