Job opening

Chair in Sociology
The Faculty of Arts of the University of Zurich
Switzerland

The successful applicant will be involved in research, teaching
and internal administration at the Sociological Institute of the
University of Zurich and a share of the financial and human
resources of the Institute will be at his/her disposal.

Applicants with a habilitation or equivalent post-doctoral work
are expected to have a strong interest in developing
sociological theory. They must be able to demonstrate experience
in research using quantitative methods, preferably complemented
by qualitative methods, as well as the ability and readiness to
participate actively in the teaching of theory and methodology
also at undergraduate levels.

The first priority when considering applications will be the
quality of research and teaching, as well as theoretical
ambitions coupled with competence in empirical research. The
next criterion will be the areas of specialization. To
complement the existing professorial age structure at the
Institute, a younger personality is being sought.

The usual language of teaching at the University of Zurich is
German. However, for a transitional period of one year, lectures
in English would be acceptable.

Applications with CV and references (please do not forward any
publications or certificates yet!) should be sent to by 15 March
2000:
